“Tell me about your boyfriend”

<Mara e Aline conversam sobre o namorado da Mara. Mara pede para ele comprar uma nova portão para a casa que construiu, e diz que um homem tem que ajudar mesmo se ele não tenha muito dinheiro. Video em português.>

Mara and Aline, sex workers in Rio’s red light district, talk about Mara’s new house, and her relationship with an older man. Mara wants her boyfriend to buy her a gate for her new house that she did “an insane amount of work” to build.  “So what, I’m going to do all that work, let him move into my new house and get laid and not help out? No way…. But it’s not like I’m going to exploit him and charge him for sex.” Aline calls the relationship unusual: “It’s not about money, because he doesn’t have any. She likes him.”

Aline:    Tell me about your boyfriend.

Mara:    I sent him a message today, asking him what I mean to him.

You know how I’ve been wanting to get a new gate for my house, right?

So I told, him, “I want a gate. I built the house and paid for it myself… and I want a gate.”

I mean, he helps out… A man has to help a woman out, right Aline?

Aline:    It’s true.

Mara:    So I told him, “I want a gate.”

He said, “I’ll help out.” I said, “No. You’re going to buy it for me. I want a gate.”

Aline:    Did he buy it?

Mara:    Not yet.

So I sent him a message today: “What do I mean to you? What do you really feel for me?”

That’s how I said it: “Think about it, and call me back with your answer. I will tell you why I’m asking all these questions. “

Aline:    What did he say?

Mara:    I don’t think he got it yet. He hasn’t replied.

Aline:    I’ve never heard a story like yours: A young woman with an older man because you actually like him.

Because it’s not like he has a good financial situation. You’re with him because you actually like him.”

I couldn’t imagine being with an older man just for his money.

Julie:    How old is old?

Mara:    He’s 53.

Aline:    She’s in love with him. It’s not about money, because he doesn’t have any. She likes him.

Julie:    Did you meet him here?

Mara:    No, I met him at another place I used to work.

Aline:    It’s kind of like this place. And they’ve been together ever since. But he’s married. He has another relationship.

Mara:    But a man has to help a woman out.

I like him, but if I’m going to pay my bills on my own, I may as well be single.

And when I feel like having sex, I can just come here [and work].

I built my house by myself. I mean, he helped out. But it was mostly me I had to do an insane amount of work to pay for all of the materials, the builders… construction is not easy.

If you knew what I went through to have my own house today…

It’s my house. It’s beautiful. There’s a deck and a backyard. I built it just the way I wanted it.

There are still some details to finish, some paint work. But I did the house, the deck, the windows, the electric and water systems…

All that in eight months, Aline.

So now what, I’m going to do all that work, let him move into my new house and fuck me?

No way. To get laid and not help out?

It’s not like I’m going to exploit him and charge him for sex.

So I laid it down today and told him: “You have an obligation to help me out. Do you think you can have a woman for free?”

Aline, I said it to his face: “You sleep in my house and you eat my food and my pussy.”

Aline:    And he wants it for free.
