This is a story about independent women in unlikely places.

RED LIGHT RIO is a conversation with women who support themselves and their families working in Rio de Janeiro’s sex industry, during a massive prostitution crackdown to sanitize the city’s image for World Cup 2014 and the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Collaboratively filmed with over seventy sex workers, and in collaboration with Brazil’s Prostitution Policy Watch, this project is an attempt to reframe the conversation about prostitution from one about victims and/or criminals, to one about breadwinners. Edited by @jruv.

I’m an Artist working and living in Galway Ireland, I found your research page through the Vice news article; Are Rio’s World Cup Sex Worker Raids Real or Just For Show?
I’m interested in basing my new work on the controversy around the world cup, and the issues surrounding prostitution highlighted by the Vice article.

    Hey Julie,
I heard about you and your work by listening to The Osher Gunsberg podcast and was very interested in what you had to say. Firstly, thank you for enlightening me and for opening my mind to view prostitution in a different light. Secondly, I am wondering if you can update us on whether or not the red light district was moved for the World Cup?
